Yamaha EMX512 powered mixer to DSR115 speaker connection
« on: December 05, 2016, 04:10:31 AM »

Hi Everyone!

First post here.

Our church purchased a new powered speaker from Yamaha (DSR115). Our old mixer is Yamaha EMX512 powered. We understand that we should not connect the powered output of the mixer (back side) to the powered speaker. However there is another output jack in the front that is unpowered and the manual says we could connect a powered speaker or amp from that jack.

Here are the specs.
EMX512 powered mixer Main Out (LR) unbalance phone output jack FRONT
Actual impedance: 600 ohms
For use with nominal: 10k ohms lines
output level nominal: +4dBu (1.23V)
output level max before clip: +20dbu(7.75V)

DSR115 Line input balance xlr and phone jacks
input sensitivity 12 oclock: +7dBu
input sensitivity max: +0dBu
max input level: +24dBu
input impedance: 12k ohms

1. Is it safe to connect the speakers to the mixer?
2. Will the unbalance to balance connection have any adverse effect to the sound?

Thank you guys!

Yes, it is safe to connect your speakers to that mixer in the way you describe. A long unbalanced run can cause noise or hum, but you can fix it by running a shorter unbalanced cable from the mixer to a DI box, then a balanced cable to the speaker.

Thank you sir!

Two more questions before this topic is closed.
1. We don't have a DI box, we will use say 4-5 feet of unbalance line. Is this sufficient to avoid the hum you speak about?
2. We will use TS phone jack (mixer side) for the unbalance side and TRS on the balance side (speaker side). Is this correct?

Again thanks.

1 - It depends but it is not optimum

2 - No, you need an adapter with a transformer to adapt the balanced to the unbalanced signal
