Kelly Epperson had Shure build a custom single tube dual mic based on the MX series mic.  The two capsules are different, cardioid and hyper.  Nice clean look - probably something that would be a terrific product replacing the usual single mic tubes taped together in a triangle shape.

I've been trying to get a few manufacturers interested in that type of 2 headed podium mic for a few years.  I like it. I'd buy a few in a heartbeat.

+1 on the plosives performance. Considering how compressed TV audio is, I didn't get a hint of it. The fact that you could hear breathing and sniffles,  yet any hand contact on the podium was not transferred, that is a lot of clean gain. Build it, I will buy.

Edit - even this new mic was apparently no good  ... Donald said afterwards they gave him "defective mic". Not sure what was wrong with it, the debate sounded fine on my TV in Australia!

"Defective" may have been that it was properly compressed so that when he leaned into it he didn't get that clipping sound that he's used to lol.

I was very impressed with the sound

Odd thought just occurred: I wonder if this is also part of an attempt by Shure to finally replace the standard dual 57s on the POTUS lectern? Certainly a Presidential debate is an excellent test run, both for showing off the hardware capabilities to WH Communications staff and acclimating the next President.

Well done, I must say.

These custom mics have been around for a while and are not new.  Don't think WHCA would use any electret mic to replace sm57.  A dynamic is simpler and less prone to not working.  To paraphrase, The look of this mic isn't presidential.

It *is* one hell of a product placement, though.

Surely the broadcast feed was taken from the lavs?

Feed was Lectern, Lavs BU. Pool takes a separate mono mix from FOH and does not have control of the mics.  They cover this as a news event, it is not their show.

There seemed to be a little mis-sync/delay of Sec Clinton's mic early on, at least on the CBS channel I was watching.

We record feeds of most broadcast outlets right off the air along with the direct feed from FOH and the Pool truck for audio quality purposes but do not record the picture.  Our intent is to prevent any broadcaster from sweetening or altering the audio.  This was Larry Estrin's pet peeve.  However, audio sync is the problem of the outlet.
