Big arrays at the RNC
« on: July 22, 2016, 11:45:00 PM »

From the picture, can you tell which model?
Which sound company is supporting this event? Any details?
Thank you!

JBL VerTec 4889.  From the hang I'm guessing ATK is the provider.

This year, both conventions, the broadcast news commentators all seem to be using really nasty sounding headset mics.  They sound nasal and distorted.  I thought the networks had higher standards than that?

They look like Countrymens.

-- watching the DNC now--- looks like ATK's 89s as well. :)

But many people think that is the way "they are supposed to sound".

It is truly sad how low the standards are these days-when there ARE better options.

Years ago we were limited in the tools we had available.

But now it seems like things are "supposed to sound like a sound system" to be acceptable..

It seems like we are going backwards.

I "thought" the goal was to be as natural sounding and accurate as possible.  I guess I was wrong----------

You have been wrong all this time  ;)
It makes me wonder why we all try to get great sound when it seems no one gives a crap anyway  :(
Sometims I mix shows where I am not doing anything really special and the promoter is beside themselves with how good it sounds.
Just how bad was the last mix person!

As long as they play the feedback sound effect every time someone approaches a microphone like they do on The Simpsons...

I hope that before I die, we will start to see a trend towards accurate reproduction.

It seems as if things are considered "cool" if they have a sound of their own-which means it is NOT accurate.

I know-natural is boring-------

I had a Pastor tell me once "I want the sound system to sound just like me-but bigger and better".

So EXACTLY HOW???? am I supposed to do that?????-----------------------

Remember why you go into audio-sit down and LISTEN

For many of us, there was one defining moment that we went WOW!!!!!!  That is cool.  A sonic experience that moved us to a different place.

Mine was in middle school sitting in the band room and some guys started jamming  Clear plexi guitar-bass guitar-Hammond B3 w/leslie and drums.  I still remember how excited I was sitting there watching these guys.

Whoever you were-THANK YOU- you moved a little kid to a life he loves :)

Let's bring that back :)

Amen to that! My gold standard came from a trio playing in our front yard back in the 1970's with NO sound system. Ever since, I've felt like I've had a good day when I can make the sound system disappear (sonically).

Maybe they chose the wrong sensitivity version of the Countryman mics if they are Countryman. They are probably talking pretty loud to get over the room noise in the sets that aren’t isolated. And the standard sensitivity Countryman mic will easily over load the front end on most wireless body packs. Even though they aren’t moving I wouldn’t be surprised if they were using wireless. And I bet with all the press on the floor that have wireless maybe they are experiencing an overly crowded RF environment. And I don’t know if they have properly frequency coordinated the whole place.
