Critical listening material
« on: June 29, 2016, 10:48:46 PM »

It is often recommended by professionals to practice critical listening to becom become better at system tuning and mixing. What material should I be purchasing? Are there any articles or books you recommend on the subject?

I have SRH840 cans and a decent Denon CD player.

I was taught that music is a picture painted on a background of silence.  If you can't hear the silence you'll have little idea of how and why the sounds work together.

Listen to the silence...

Listen to the style of music you working with, and Play around with parametric EQ, to become familiar with changes in your style.

Not recorded material, but the sound of the full moon rising over the Badlands of Pine River is undeniable and inspiring.  The natural manifestation of Aum.

I highly recommend checking this out:

Get multitrack recordings and practice mixing them. Get others advise on how to produce desired results. Eating food doesn't teach you how to cook.
