Next on Musician RIP -
« on: April 25, 2016, 12:43:47 AM »

Papa Wemba.  RIP.

My exposure to him and his music began with his collaborations with Peter Gabriel.

Yep, just read about his passing, too.  So many going so soon.

Remo Belli's contribution to popular music is almost incalculable. Without the plastic drumhead that Remo perfected (some say he invented it), the rock'n'roll revolution brought on by The Beatles could never have happened. There's no way drum companies could ever have produced that many drumsets fitted with calfskin heads—there are simply not enough usable hides available. Not to mention making it so much easier for beginning drummers to get a decent sound (calfskin requires constant retuning; plastic is much closer to set-it/forget-it).

I suggested a couple of years ago that there should be a separate forum for obits and posts of this nature. That would eliminate seeing them in 2-3 different forums. You could also throw in the catastrophe's resulting in injury and death. Just a way to tidy this up. In the ARRL we call it "silent keys". Maybe here it could be called "Passings" or "Lost talent".
