Peavey IPR2 5000 vs. Crest ProLite 5.0
« on: February 11, 2016, 03:04:54 AM »

Looking at getting some new amps on monitor duty, and was wondering what the opinions were on these two amps. Both seem to be the same basic beast; just wanted to know if certain things like the DDT circuit on the Peaveys made any appreciable difference.
Thanks for any insights!

I have both. The Crest has the same circuit. I found Prolite 5.0 DSP's new for $599. The DSP has Maxxbass built in...worth the price. Both work fine.

As John said, they're the same amp - just flipped upside down with the Crest badging.

I've got some ProLite 3.0 (non-DSP).  One (out of six) died upon first power-up.  Not exactly confidence-building.  Had to ship to Peavey and wait 3 weeks for it to return.  Two diodes apparently failed.  Others have worked fine, but have yet to be pushed really hard.

Hope this helps,
Dave

  Two diodes apparently failed.

I wouldn't blame Crest too much for that fault.  MBRS1100 Schottky diodes made by International Rectifier (IR) which is one of the largest, US-listed semicon companies came out with a bad batch. Just about every product they were used in had problems. Sometimes things happen, as long as crest resolved the problem things should be ok.

I have both in the Prolite 7.5 vs IPR2 7500 non-DSP variety.  Other than the board flipping over, the Crest has a rocker on/off switch and only lights up when on.  The Peavey lights up with power and the push button switch is no help as a visual cue to power being on or off.  I prefer the Crest, it's also available at a lower cost if you know where to look.

I don't.

Just wish that the amp in question had undergone one more power cycle / burn-in before boxing it up at the factory.  It was a "luck of the draw" thing that cost me some shipping and time.

I too eye the 7.5 every now and then.  It's just the right power to run my B&C double 18 cabs one cab per side.

I try to be objective but someone I trust at Northern Stage and Light steered me away from these said they have very poor current reserve and just don't do well with subs.

If I have learned anything here is that specs don't mean anything, has anyone run these amps on sub duty and would you call them adequate?

The price/power/weight all fall in a category that appeal to me.   I am running 8 Behringer EP2500's (one on each driver in bridge mode!  They load well bridged into 8 ohms) and they do everything I want.  I can also fix the EP2500's in my sleep so the only drivers in play here is that I can go from 250lbs to 30lbs and rekit these subs so I can send them out as 2/4 or 8 and the EP2500's are 8 years old and the kit looks banged up.  As soon as it warms up I am going to strip, sand fill and repaint the cabinets and have the grills done with black oxide.

Opinions appreciated as always.
