The gearheads here probably know this, but higher octane isn't necessarily a higher "grade" or "more powerful." The octane rating refers to how likely it is to detonate under compression; fuel with a higher octane rating is more resistant to detonation (the "pinging" sound you might hear when the engine is under load, which is due to the fuel igniting before the ignition system fires.). This also affects how quickly it ignites when exposed to flame.
Yep.  The conventional wisdom used to be to use the lowest octane that didn't cause preignition.  But nowadays cars have detonation sensors and will retard the timing if any happens.  So you can put lower octane gas in the car and it will adapt, losing a bit of power in the process.  Different ECMs have different recoveries.  Some need to be reset, but most will over time try to inch the advance back up to the original factory program over time if it doesn't detect knocking.  Which supports the myth that putting better gas in your car makes it more powerful.  Cause and effect confusion, but empirically correct nonetheless.

I was hoping people would just post what they are paying for fuel in different parts of the country/world and not go political.

Over here it's about £1.07 per litre which is £4.87 per gallon or $7.33.

But as the US gallon is slightly smaller than an imperial gallon, the equivalent is $6.10 per US gallon.

Here in Ireland it's about €1.20/litre for diesel...so roughly $4.80 for a US Gallon :)

You Brits always think you're superior, saying that not only are your gallons larger, they're IMPERIAL.  ;)

I just paid $2.159/US gallon (with a 20 cent/gallon shopper loyalty card discount) for 87 octane (regular) where I live here in southwest Washington state. Right now in the Portland/Vancouver region it varies between $2.09 at Costco (warehouse club) up to around $2.60, with a few outliers around $3.00.

Probably.  It's natural to think our own countries are the best, but in my experience, Americans do seem to press that point more than anyone else!

I think you could make a lot of money if you put in a pipeline across the atlantic.

We are working on export terminals for LNG so we can get Europe off of the Russian gas pipeline teat. I think we already export refined gasoline to Europe, but it is still against the law to export raw crude oil.

The Chevron at Exit 9 next to the Clark County Fairgrounds is $2.99 -- since that's right off the exit, and the first one for a bit that someone sees, I'm sure they do good business. The Shell station on 4th Plain is $2.39 (cash) -- so $2.49 with card I think.

The two Shell stations near the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife (exit 136 and off of Portland Avenue) - I filled up the truck there yesterday for $2.249/g. Having just been back and forth from Seattle, I can say that's the best price right night between Portland and Seattle.

Paid $1.66 here in NW Ohio yesterday. It will go up 20-30 cents overnight and then slowly work its way down over a week or two, regardless of the price.
