Small Powered Monitor Recommendations?
« on: October 07, 2015, 02:38:24 PM »

I'm looking to purchase some small personal powered monitors that I could place in video and graphics world on my corporate shows. A simple reliable unit with a simple volume control and parallel inputs would be ideal. Recommendations?

John,

The Fostex 6301 is fairly ubiquitous. I like the Mackie SRM150 and have also been eyeing up the RemoteAudio SpeakEasy 3b for a few years...versatility is always nice.

I'll use my Qbox w/ home-brew PSU if needed - not hifi, but very usable

Thanks Jordan. I've used the Fostex and the Mackie in the past for this application. I figured I'd post to make sure I'm not missing out on something new. I'm going to checkout that RemoteAudio Speakeasy speaker you listed. Thanks again.

I've used them, too; we put ours on the floor, underneath the tech tables - it worked nicely and I didn't feel like my face was getting ripped off. My kneecaps didn't mind, either. ;-)

Yamaha has the new DBR 10... Maybe a bit bigger but under $400. They also have intro'd a new simple truss mount...adding to flexibility

The EV ZXA-1 is a very small powered monitor that performs really well.

The 6301 is hard to beat for a well designed, robust speaker that you can distribute along backstage tech tables.
Expensive, yes, but do sound very nice.
The Speak Easy is handy for video control positions where you might want to monitor different sources.

I bought a TC Helicon Voicesolo and have been pleased so far.  Mic stand mounted puts it basically in my face for when FOH is not in the main pattern.  Nice sound and loud enough.

I've found that a lot of theaters have a few Anchor AN-1000s sitting around for that purpose:
