Theater dorks - this one's for you...
« on: September 03, 2015, 12:44:30 PM »

I'd like to pick up a couple of boundary mics for sound reinforcement of stage productions.  The Crown PCC-160 seems to be the standard.  I know they work well, but they come at a price - even used on ebay - that makes them a little hard to swallow for no-budget community productions.

Here's my question - has anyone tried the Crown PCC-170 in this application?  The 170 is a lot more available and less expensive than the 160 and if they work nearly as well, they could be a good alternative.

What say you?

Did you compare the way the Crown and the Bartlett sound?  Do they play well together?

Comparable.  The only time I used them together was a wide stage with Irish dancers.

They're essentially the same mic, but his update of the Crown design should be better if only for the robustness and reliability.  I bought the hard-wired version which is a VAST improvement over the old T-4 connectors on the Crowns.  I had occasional drop-outs with the Crowns due to the connectors.  Totally unacceptable.

If you're after hi-fi, he offers a more sensitive "orchestral recording" version which I have not tried.
I commonly use mine for camera audio feeds and remote broadcast and they sound great.

Thank you, Dick. Irish hard shoe step dance, clogging, tap, and similar are my primary uses too.  I have three of the PCC160's; but if I add new ones I will definitely look at the Bartlett version.

I like the e912 for hard shoe, at least I like it better than the Crown, cannot comment on the Bartlett.

@the OP, regardless of which mic you choose, they are only going to work if the actors put the sound into the mic.
