Dual Monitors For One Mix - Opinions / Facts !
« on: July 29, 2015, 10:41:09 PM »

Hi Folks,

When running a pair of 2 way monitors for one mix for a lead vocalist, what is the correct practice?

O= Woofer
X= Horn

O X  X O      or     X O  O X

My instinct tells me to keep the horns on the inside to lessen chance of high frequencies bleeding into the sides of the vocal mic.

Pros/Cons ?

my answer would be O X X O , try to keep hf drivers as close as possible to get lesser phase issues . You can ring out the feedback frequencies . Or eq to get desired results

Yep! Thought it sounded familiar when I saw your thread pop up, but had to jog my memory for the title before I found it :)

I say Horns on the outside as normally you wouldn't have the wedges close enough together to get any good coupling of the HF. Also if the HF are out, they are aiming more directly at each ear... so technically you shouldn't need as much volume from your wedge.

My opinion anyway!

When you consider the wavelengths of the various devices and look at the spacing-it is not what you might think.

Consider that the devices should be within 1/4 wavelength to not interfere.

For 2Khz that is about 1.5".  As you go higher it get smaller.

I highly doubt you can get the drivers that close together.

Actually this is a case where the directionality of our ears as well as the fact we have two of them comes into play as well as some of the filters in the brain.

I would put the horns to the outside so each is pointed at one ear. The sound pressure by time it is refracted around the head should be low enough that combing is not significant.

Good points!  But with them on the outside  I'd figure we'd expect faster issues with 1K and above feedback issues with the vocal mic for that mix.

Pretty much all the artists I seem to work with play guitar and do not wander from the "zone"

Depends on the pattern of the mic.
