Recommended dual driver buds as back-ups
« on: July 04, 2015, 09:43:42 AM »

Ran sound last weekend for the band using iems. Bass players earbuds stopped working on one side. Fortunately I had a not so good pair I could let him use (and keep). They got him through the night.

It made Chris realize that he probably needs a back-up pair for himself when he plays. He uses Westones UM20's and although there are much better drivers out there, he is very happy with them. I hope he doesn't have to use a back up pair - ever, so we don't want to spend too much on them.
He could probably get away with single drivers if he had to. His Etymotic singles were great but when he switched to the Westones, our daughter 'stole' them. No getting them back either LOL….
Any suggestions?……trying to stay under $150.

BTW…Happy 4th to everyone !!!

I own each of these...

Westone UM Pro 30 ($299)
Shure SE425 ($299)
JTS IE-6 ($229) ?
Westone UM Pro 10 ($149)
Audeo PFE122 ($139)
MiPro E-8P ($100)
and some really junky ones too.

Of all the ones that sell for under $150, I would say that the UM Pro 10's sound the best/most natural. They have decent low end if you push them in deeply enough so they won't fall out.

Audio Technica ATH-IM50/70

I bought a pair of those from recommendations on this board. My drummer loves them. I haven't used them but a happy musician is music to my ears.
Under 100 bucks.

I got the IM50s

I think the Shure SE425 are about the best bang for the buck. IMO

Thanks eveyone for the suggestions. Out of all the recommendations, it seems the AT IM50/70 are the favorite in the under $150 category.
I read all the reviews I could find on these and settled on a pair of IM70's. Can't believe the price of these duals- In fact I bought 2 pairs at that price as I am now doing far more vocals from my FOH position (yes we really do this live and I am having so much fun) and I need a pair to be able to monitor my voice (more me) in the songs where I am singing.  I tried with over ears for ease of quickly putting on - taking off but with my mic headset, it was all very bulky and silly looking on my head!...... I figured as I will be mono, I would keep one ear phone in one ear and put the other one in when I need to.

Be careful of the one in-one out bit.  A custom molded plug cuts maybe 30dB from the mid range through HF, much less in the low end.  Push in things cut less.  So your open ear is exposed to e.g. 95 dB.  The closed ear is getting 70+.  In order to hear "more me" over the open ear your going for >3 dB over ambient, which in this case is the open ear at 95  Now you're shoving a mix at ~100 dB into your ear or even more if you want to hear yourself clearly.  Often to overcome the noise floor in the plugged ear and the open ear, it takes pretty serious levels.  Not good for the old ears.

Get an ER10 or 15 plug for the "open" ear, or an Earasers plug ($40/pair) so you can hear the mix clearly but at an attenuated level.  Then the one with the IEM doesn't have to break things for you to hear it.
