JBL STX800 and SRX800 pricing
« on: May 28, 2015, 11:05:41 AM »

I just did a price check (MAP) on the new JBL SRX800 powered boxes. I am very surprised that the SRX812P that has the built in amplifier with JBL V5 tunings is only $100 more than the passive STX812M. I'm stuck here wondering what the trade off might be as the pricing seems too good to be true.

That was my confusion when they were first released. The math simply doesn't make sense IF the new SRX 800 series is supposed to be as good if not better than the old SRX700 and the STX800 series.

It looks like they have the same 2432H  HF driver but have different 12" LF drivers, 2206 in the STX and 2272 in the SRX.

I have heard the SRX-815P, and it's a very nice sounding box.  I have a pair of SRX-812P on order - should have them next week.

I haven't heard the STX series for comparison , but looking at the specs, the SRX-800 series single woofer boxes are rated significantly louder than the STX-M versions:

STX812M:
75Hz -3dB
130dB Peak
42lbs

SRX-812P:
48Hz -3dB
136dB Peak
58lbs

STX815M:
55Hz -3dB
131dB Peak
58lbs

SRX-815P:
44Hz -3dB
137dB Peak
63lbs

STX835:
43Hz -3dB
134dB Peak
126lbs

SRX-835P:
41Hz -3dB
136dB Peak
85lbs

I'm pretty confident that without ITechHD on the STX, the SRX800P series is going to sound better than the STX series - especially without biamping.

JBL is going to sell a lot of the SRX800P series.

I'm very interested in these boxes.  Looking forward to your report!

Let's assume that they sound as good if not better than the SRX700 and STX800 series…. The question is how can JBL produce speakers that perform this well at this price point (compared to the pricing of the other 2 unpowered series)???
As John mentioned in his original post - it would seem there has to be a trade off somewhere???

Trade-off would have to be the power amp module, IEC would be a dead giveaway and of course the ratings are exaggerated; they list 1500w as continuous on the SRX812P, 750w program on SRX818SP... Nonetheless I'm still considering the SRX800P series myself.

I'm not sure why IEC connectors are a dead giveaway - lots of $$,$$$ equipment has IEC connectors.  I presume the reason for the power difference between models is that each of the amp channels is 1000w.  The SRX818 has a single amp channel, the SRX812P has two - one for the HF and one for the LF.

The specs may or may not be exaggerated, but should be at least similar methodology to the STX since they're both JBL products.

Exactly. Different LF drivers

I have heard the SRX812P. They sound very good. They are a little larger than I expected though.

I think Tom is referring to optimistic power amp output ratings as compared to power capacity ratings of the passive speakers.  Both are of the averaged duty cycle type but the passive speakers have a reputation for accommodating a fair amount of power amp.  Whereas the amp module in the powered ones may be of very limited duty cycle, at 1kHz, at some substantial distortion, or a calculated instantaneous peak rating to keep up with similarly spec'd competitors.
