These days I mostly use a single Heil PR30 LDD (large diaphragm dynamic).
No phantom needed.

Single oh and hh is my usual go to setup. Only on the largest rooms do I go to single oh, ride, hh. I never do double oh unless it is specific to a rider.

My first choice for all three is audio techica atm450. If budget is a concern audio technica pro 37 also works extremely well for its cost.

Thanks for the replies!  Lot's of good info.  Again, this would be for occasional outdoor gigs.  No need for OH inside..

e914. It manages to sound bright in a nice way, without being "harsh".

Hey all!  I'm looking for a direction/suggestions for some overheads and hihat mics for live use only.  Our current setup for normal (indoor, small bar/club) gigs is Sennheiser E604s on toms, 57 on snare and D-112 on kick.  It would be for the occasional outdoor gig where the cymbals just get lost.  I have 3 channels open for use so I could go 2 overhead but would be happy if just 1 could cover the OH with 1 mic on HH.  Not looking to go high end or bottom of the barrel.  Just good quality mics with good/decent sound.  I've been researching for a while and I'm stuck...  Any help is much appreciated!!!  Thanks!

The AKG P170 is a really good choice for about $80.

I like the Shure SM94 for hat and overhead.  Additionally, it is a great utility mic.

I was going to say I agreed with Tim on this, but add "If you must, then a Heil PR-30 is a great way to go."

By the way, I heard you picked up on a really good deal on a Heil drum kit a couple of weeks ago?

I've been using 2 of these for a month or so and I gotta say that they sound very good. I actually prefer them over my AKG 300 but it's old so it probably isn't a fair comparison. I'm very happy with them and how can you go wrong for 80 bucks. More in Canada.
