My first thought was attenuator.  By the way, it should read "whose."

That's my vote as well. Variac. So, without being in your class I think your limerick sucks.

Have the class try this one for some extra credit.
Old mother Hubbard went to the "     " to fetch her poor doggie a "    ". But when she bent over, Rover "    " her. For he had a "     " of his own.

My 12 years of parochial school spelling let me down. More like this? And is "stank" the past tense of "stink"?  :D

There once was a player named Frank
Whose guitar on the stage really cranked
We spun the big knob, and went on with the job
And the sound mix no longer did stank

How about "...And the sound mix no longer was rank"?

While that's good, I'm going to stick with the stank since it's a bit of a twist.

Two out of the dozen students in my Live Sound Lecture class got it right on the Tuesday exam. I'm also using this for my Live Sound Practicum class today with another eight students and will report how well they did. We demonstrated a power soak on a tube guitar amp early in the semester, so we'll see how well they retained the info.

Yes, I'm officially a "professor" which always cracks up my wife when she hears one of my students refer to me that way.  ???

Cupboard, bone, drove, bone

Substitute drove for impaled or a similar polysybalic word - and I think we've got old Mother Hubbard's issue nailed down!
