Front Fills necessary for this gig?
« on: April 18, 2015, 07:24:07 PM »

Got a charity gig on May 1, venue is one of the smaller combined ballrooms at Hilton Americas Houston, outlined by the outer rectangle. Because they have the stage set up on the wide side outlined by the inner rectangle with yellow fill, I have to cover some crazy wide areas using two 90x45 Renkus Heinz TRX121/9 cabs side-by-side on sticks, so four cabs total. Bringing two SRX728's also.

Now for the front crowd, is it worth it to put out some front fills?

Specs from Hilton: LEVEL FOUR - Grand Ballroom-Grand Ballroom G, H, I, J, K and L
- Room Size: 18,620 sq. ft.
- Dimensions: 118.00 ft. x 156.33 ft.
- Ceiling Height: 27.00 ft.

Short answer: yes.

How far are listeners from the stage?  Is it seated?  Is there a speech part of the program?  You'll probably need front fills.

I'd say 5 feet. It's seated. Yes there's speech. Yeah thought so, just making sure.

Those are also probably your money seats so I would make sure they are covered.

What do you mean by " charity gig"?  Are you working for a registered charity or just doing a freebie?

Band or DJ? If DJ you might be able to cover the room by pulling your four tops back or even on the stage. If it's Knights of Columbus I don't imagine they're going to want it too loud.

Band. I'm not going all out, since it's a small size, it's just that the stage is on the wide side so that's why I have to do the unorthodox 2 90x45 by the side for very wide coverage.

Your diagram  doesn't show where the seats are at,... You may not need as wide of coverage as you thought, once you get into the room.  FWIW, if the band brings amps, the center channel may only need vocals (or a separate mix).  There are many ways to skin that cat, depending on your console's options. Also, the stage looks about 70' wide, so you may prefer two center speakers.

I started using center fills for most of my gigs about a year ago and find them helpful. I also find it helpful to walk around the room, even during the 'show', with my iPad to make some adjustments to both overall volume and the center mix.

I'd go with the front fills. My opinion is that you can use a smaller box/lower output for this application. If the audience is placed close to the front just lower the output of the fills.
