Yup this gets a little complicated and a parallel limiting function can be performed, but I can imaging low frequency energy being much stronger than HF bandpass so errors could occur from limiting before the HPF.

Of corse somebody much smarter than me would have to do this.... 8)

Surely it's possible to buffer the output signal and make a determination before passing it to the hardware outputs?

Buffer is a digital concept so would have to be added in the digital domain.  I know my QSC KW gear has soft limiters.  That not only reduce overall level but can do it on a pass band basis.

Yes and a few mSec of delay for the entire loudspeaker is inconsequential, ASSuming arrayed cabinets are all delayed a similar amount.

I am still not convinced that anything in the physical world happens instantaneously.

I do prefer to let the design engineers do what they do best... (hint... powered speakers)
