The Chapman Stick is one of those instruments you "get" right away or it simply baffles you.  I'm not a guitarist but I found it suited my keyboard-oriented training in ways that no other string instrument did.  One of these days I'll have to get one.  Fascinating instrument with some incredible players.

I also like the sound of harp guitar, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps is in the repertoire of several masters of that instrument, too.

So melodic.

For a more percussive/bassy approach to the Chapman stick, check out Tony Levin's work with Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason album, and others.

Got to meet Tony and band during the Waters of Eden tour.  Larry Fast had long been a Servodrive customer with one of the small subs in his studio, and we loaned him a Contrabass for that tour.

As it happened of course, the band was essentially everyone from Gabriel's band during the heyday of Peter's solo works.

The Stick is a very cool instrument, and Tony is a master at it.

Best regards,

John

You met Larry Fast? I'm impressed. I have all his early solo albums and loved the synth work he did with Gabriel. A real synth pioneer.

And now back to the Chapman stick
Great video. I'm surprised we don't see the stick more.

Perhaps the harpejji would suit you too...

Classically trained players make the best use of a Chapman stick. I've never been much with styles that require use of more than 2 fingers to hold a pick. My fingers are just too short. That piece was played very well, the type of music that might just help get through driving around Boston traffic every day.

Now I need to learn to play the stick and the harpejji. I had never heard of either of them before. Great instuments. And you just relieved me of my guilt over not having tried to learn the guitar. I do manage to massacre the violin, and can produce tunes on the  piano.
