Tiny Sub recommendations for Acoustic Duo
« on: December 19, 2014, 11:09:36 AM »

I'm looking for some recommendations on a tiny sub suitable for use with an acoustic duo.  Gigs would be happy hour type, 50 to 100 people.  Tops are QSC K10's (Maybe QSC KW122 on larger gigs).  A couple of EV ZXA1-Sub 12" look pretty ideal, but I have zero experience with them.  Thoughts anyone?

Small Active subs:

If you can do passive, these are the best small subs I have ever heard

All 3 of those are great suggestions. The small Yorkville's will surprise you and won't break the bank.

You really need to audition the speakers to know what you are getting.  The zxa1-sub is more of a woofer for small speakers to be used in a small space than a true subwoofer.  Before buying a pair and being disappointed you should listen to them and compare them to a QSC KW-181, since you already have QSC tops.  A single KW-181 will give you much more impact than the pair of zxa-1-subs, going lower & louder.  I would leave the EV sub for it's intended purpose of adding some bottom to the 8" zxa-1 tops it was designed for.

I've used a single ZXA1 Sub over two ZXA1's and the little thing rocks. We put electric drums and bass guitar through it for an open mic event, 20-40 people and it fills the room. The other option is the KSub it's definitely a bigger box and I would really call it an acquired or specialized sound. Definitely not as throw and go as the ZXA1 sub in my experience. Just my $0.02

I would say the zxa1-sub is great for in intimate coffee shop setting, but the KW seems to be a better fit for the loud happy hour crowd of 100 people.  Teetotalers tend to be MUCH quieter than beer drinkers.  :-)

It's better to turn down the gain of a KW than be sitting there wishing for more sub.

What will be in the music that necessitates the subwoofer?   Backing tracks / drum machine / set break music?  I'm not trying to talk you out of it, just simplify the search.

I've found the Yamaha DXS12 is a good in-between sub for bar & restaurant gigs.   People will knock it for having a relatively narrow bandwidth and a somewhat high F3 point, but if you need to drive some kick drum and some bass into 100 people or so, it does a great job without taking up too much room in the car and without taking too much out of the bank.

Anyone want to comment on the Yamaha DSX-12 sub?
http://usa.yamaha.com/products/live_sound/speakers/active_speakers/dxs/dxs12/

Borrowed one for a while and liked it better than my QSC K-sub.  Sounded tighter.  Bad news it is particle board and not ply.  Great size, though.
Other pros/cons?

Silly question, but why does an acoustic duo need a sub? If you're just doing vocals and guitars, the K10's should be more than adequate. If you wanted a little more bass, step up to the K12's. But adding a sub unless you're playing with backing tracks seems a bit much.
