Check Lawrence Welk re-runs for some of the best unintentionally surreal  comedy out there......
I remember watching Lawrence Welk with my grandparents.

WOW is all I can say.  Can we get any more "hokey".

I have heard that he was VERY HARD to the performers

Truly spiritual. I remember seeing god more than once back in the 60's, I just don't remember much of anything else.

As they say, if you can remember the '60s you weren't really there (at least not in Boston or SF).  :o

PS: My parents loved Lawrence Welk and they tape recorded TV shows off the air with my dad's early RCA open reel tape recorder. I actually have a pile of LW show tapes but never bothered listening to them. I did listen to a bunch of his mono commercial RCA classical recordings. While the bandwidth and S/N was not up to modern standards good classical performances always shine through despite the medium.

And who can resist a hot chick playing an accordion?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGpLpqU9jC4#t=42

IIRC Jo Ann Castle also played a lot of piano for LW in addition to accordion. She had really short fingers, but was a good overall keyboard player. For you non-keyboard (guitar) players out there, just because you can play a piano doesn't mean you can automatically play an accordion. EVERYTHING changes on an accordion, and I'm not even talking about the button accordions which are just CRAZY to play.

And here's how you make accordion playing SEXY. Get three pretty girls to play white accordions while the announcer speaks Russian (I think). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xccWo0mLcQ

The quote I'd heard about his instructions to the band was: "Look like you're having fun - but don't!"
