Recommendations for Surge Protector
« on: November 25, 2014, 03:22:26 PM »

I will be installing some flat-panel tv sets at my church. I'm assuming that it would be a good idea to plug each one into a surge protector, but this isn't mentioned in the owner's manual at all. Each tv consumes a max of 250 watts at 120 volts, with only one tv and its HDMI converter (9 watts) per power strip. It will be 10 feet in the air, so each one will only be used for these devices. I can get surge protectors for $7 and up. How much importance should I put on the joule rating? The more the merrier? 790, 990, 1080, 2160, 2520 joule are all available for less than $20. I looked at the SurgeX line, but I can't justify spending $300 per set. Is there a reasonable middle ground?

I wouldn't bother with a surge protector.

Because your TVs are connected to your system through the (I assume) shielded CAT5 cable the only surge protector I would use is SurgeX SA-82

It is $170 so your call.  For a 70 or 80 in TV in the area I live it might be a good idea.

If it makes a difference, we are going from an Atlona AT-HDCAT-4 DA via cat 6 to an Atlona AT-HDRX to get it back to an HDMI signal.

Some disorganized thoughts:
a] The best place is a whole house (or building) surge protection system.
b] The best point of use surge protectors are:
Brick Wall
ZeroSurge
SurgeX
c] If using MOV point of use surge protectors, then they all should be the same model number. So that they all clamp at the same voltage.
d] Now with so many other protectors in the average building, points 'B' & 'C' may not matter anymore.
