Granted it was an unusually informal event, a multi-day fundraiser with Branford, among others playing each night.  I did misspeak, the request was for a SM58 on a stand (no mention of straight).

My guess is that the casual nature of the event meant that "hey, yeah, whatever.  I can work with a 58."   Heck...if you CAN'T make a 58 work for you...well...

Update:  the event went well.

It was a memorial service for a dear friend of mine for 40 years. He was a supporter of the BSO, the POPs and Tanglewood.

I did the sound as a favor to the family. Darkstar Lighting from Vermont did a video wall for a movie and slides as well as lighting. They brought an MQ 45kw fror power. I got to use Darkstar's UPjuniors which were a treat for me. We ran mains and delays from matrices on my GLD80.

I used an RE320 on the sax and got compliments on the sound. Four mics on the drums, Beta52 on bass drum, Heil PR31BWs on snare and hat and an SM81 overhead. A JDI for keys and a direct out of a pedal for the bass. It was a pleasure to work with John Lockwood again. He has this 100+ year old upright bass. It sounds amazing.  I used a Sennheiser e865 for the female vocal. No monitors :-)

Darkstar provided the lectern along with a microboom on a short stalk. The speeches came out clear and no feedback. Feedback was my main worry as the room was very reverberant at sound check the day before but adding 300 people helped.

I want to say here that the crew from Darkstar were real pros and a pleasure to work with.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I need a Pro35.

Skip it in favor of the atm-350.  nice bag, included violin mount, better sound all make it worth the premium over the Pro 35.

KSM32 on ANYTHING...
I did sound a few times for a great local Bluegrass act that carries
their own single large diaphragm mic along with them.  The Shure KSM44A is
the model they use.
I used a pair of JF260s and a single EAW sub and was really taken back at the articulation and accuracy out of this microphone.  WOW great mic.
Typically I use a large diaphragm Audio Technica but the Shure was above and beyond in performance.

I have both the 32's and the 44's.  For the single mic technique I'd go with the 32.  The 44 is better for recording, but I prefer the 32 for live.

Plus one.

I do a lot of bluegrass. KSM32 is my favorite for this purpose.

Any experience with the Beta27?

Betas suck...except perhaps for the 57.  They're the Edsel of the Shure line-up.  Why would you want everything to sound like it's coming through a tin megaphone?
