OK, I've ranted enough on my dislike of MOVs.
So I started looking around. Found these. Any comments?
http://www.zerosurge.com/technical-info/how-surge-suppression-works/Of course, Surgex devices are highly regarded here, but I felt they were mostly out of my price range
- Then I saw their "residential" series... with one at Staples for under $30...

For instance, whether it is 15amp capacity or less. Their sales spiel goes like this:
SurgeX offers two retail product lines to safeguard your equipment against power disturbances. Our Defender Series line incorporates SurgeX Multi-Stage technology, ensuring a high level of protection from damaging surges, spikes, over voltage anomalies, EMI/RFI noise, and wiring faults. The Defender Series improves the reliability of connected digital equipment and is built to handle surges without sacrificing performance or longevity. Our Eliminator Series line incorporates Advanced Series Mode technology, eliminating surge energy up to 6,000 Volts without producing harmful side effects such as ground contamination or common-mode disturbances. Completely non-sacrificial and never requiring reset, the Eliminator Series protects equipment from AC surges and electrical transients that can cause equipment degradation, failure, and downtime.Of course, I'm not expecting something for nothing. When buying, I would like to get close to the 80% Pareto Efficiency, though. Comments?
As a totally different direction on surge suppression...
Also, I found some interesting products from LittleFuse -
TMOV - basically, a MOV with a thermal "fuse" in the same package
ITMOV - a three legged design consisting of a TMOV plus an indicator line.
Any experiences with these?
Know of any products using these devices. They would seem far safer than a run-of-the-mill MOV in that shutdown in case of failure, but most importantly partial failure would be graceful.
