Is this a good idea?
« on: August 24, 2014, 01:31:15 AM »

I have 2- JBL MPro 418s Subwoofers. I busted one a while back and I have to replace it now due to some upcoming events... They had the original JBL 2241gpl drivers in them however I'm looking into replacing them with Eminence 18" Omega Pro-18C Drivers hoping to get a little more out of them... Will this help?

Do I need to go with the 8 Ohm version or the 4 Ohm?

I will be using 2 Crown XLS1000 Power Amps Bridged to push the subs (one per sub) 700 Watts at 8 Ohms, 1,100 Watts at 4 Ohms. Crossover anywhere from 50-90 Hz.

Mostly live bands ( anything from acoustic sets to full bands) every now and then CD type music. Room is a 100x150 1200 soul max capacity event venue but usually only have around 500 people in attendance.

If this helps mains are 2 EV ELX112s powered by a Crown XLS1500 crossed over at 250 Hz as well as 2 EV ELX112 delay fills about 60 feet out form the mains powered by a Crown XLS1500 Bypass Crossover.

Mains are poled overtop of subwoofers...

I would get it reconed and keep the 2241.  If you replace the drivers with anything other than JBL the resale value of the cabinets drops to an unknown level somewhere more than zero dollars but much less than what would have been a real JBL mpro 218.

This is a good point!
Also, is the specification on the Eminence driver compatible with the cabinet tuning ?
Go with the recone.

No, the Omega is a downgrade from the 2241.. get your JBL reconed for that and all the reasons stated above.

50hz? These subs don't produce a lot below 50hz so why would you cross them so low?

If this helps mains are 2 EV ELX112s powered by a Crown XLS1500 crossed over at 250 Hz as well as 2 EV ELX112 delay fills about 60 feet out form the mains powered by a Crown XLS1500 Bypass Crossover.
250Hz? Really? If the subs are crossed at 90hz max what is covering everything between 90 and 250hz?

I guess it depends upon the type of music but your system appears to be a fair bit undersized for a venue that size. If you are blowing drivers that's also a good indication you don't have enough rig for the gig, and instead of trying to get more from the gear you have with more amp power it's better to add more drivers and amplifiers(for subs in particular), and keep the applied power more modest.. everything will last longer and sound better.
