Yamaha PM5D fader replacement
« on: August 29, 2014, 12:11:46 PM »

We have a PM5D with 3 faders that have lost automation, calibration did not remedy the issue.

I'd order new faders, and install them but am not sure that it will solve the problem.

On an O1V, the transistors that control the fader motors are on the PCB and not in the fader module, necessitating surface mount replacement that we farmed out as opposed to a simple fader replacement we can handle in house.

Does anyone have experience with this issue on a PM5D?

Thanks,

Steve

Pop the hood and swap the affected fader leads (2 small white header connectors); one is fader DC signal and the other is DC power for the fader motor; with a known good fader channel.  If the fader is bad it will respond the same on another good channel's 'control and power amplifier'.
I've had alps VCA faders go cold on the wiper element solder joint.  Sometimes can be repaired by reheating joint.  If it's the conductive plastic/solder joint you will be able to meter this with a DMM (DC ohms) and compare to a good fader.
Also make sure the glide shafts are clean and not inhibiting movement of the wiper element.

Check your PMs.

Both helpful answers, Yamaha tech support believes it to be faders, as the circuits driving the fader.

Will perform the swap and verify.
