Sweetwater has matched pair for $199.00.  If I needed another batch of SDC, I'd be on the phone right now...

But with a half dozen C-535, 6 of AT4041, 6 C-391 and 6 Oktava MC012, I think I'm set on utility SDC.  Man, I need to do more symphony gigs again...

I think you may be confusing the Rode M 5  with the nt-5.  I have not used the M-5.  the nt-5 has a very low noise and a pretty high max SPL rating making it a superb general purpose recording condenser plus an all purpose anything but live vocal mic.  (and you could probably do live vox with the windscreen on most moderate shows - not rock/country/rap )

My piano budget mic is a pair of DPA 4099 with the magnetic base.

Looking online, I'm finding the ATM450 and AE3000 to be promising because of them being side address and very compact, anyone got experience with these mics?

I'm ruling out conventional pencil condensers because again the piano is on half lid, can't go full open because it obstructs view of choir director. Plus it will be difficult to position for the lower strings.

I use the atm450 as overhead and percussion utility mics. I love them. Never put one on a piano but could see that working fine.

Perhaps, but there's a lot of "room" in the equation....

My apologies to Dick for the edited quote-but it caused my to think.

Our auditorium is quite reverberant-designed in the days before SR.  Also, it is a 9' grand and we use a minimum of amplification-mic is primarily for monitors.   I have no doubt that in a modern acoustically treated room the difference would be clear-in our case the difference is negligible.

In any case, my comment was intended to point out that depending on the whole situation a Barcus Berry just might keep up with a pair of quality mics while solving other issues.

Placing a good-sized piece of thick pile carpeting under the grand piano can help tame things in a reverberative space.

Does AKG do out-of-warranty repairs? It was purchased 5 years ago.

My go-to guy for AKG mic repair is Richard Land.

Thanks for the thought!  Our pastor is determined to switch from a low pile carpet to a hardwood floor in the near future.  Now I know what to suggest to fix the problems we will be fighting one of these days.
