Feedback in Vocal PA
« on: August 20, 2014, 07:31:56 PM »

Hey guys, so im a bass player in a band and recently we upgraded our vocal PA to 2X RCF 525a for FOH and 2X RCF 322a for monitors.  The speakers work well.  We are having a lot of trouble with feedback and particularly kick drum causing feedback thru FOH.  We have 5 singers/mics across the front of stage and 3 of the vocal mics are literally only 3 ft in front of the drums.  So, am i stupid in thinking a gate may drastically reduce this issue?  We dont ring out our pa or anything like that, we just turn it up as much as we can whilst achieving a good vocal sound.  Thanks for the help, Simon Sharp

Probably best to change that alias anyways now, given the circumstances...

Gating a kick mic can help reduce feedback, so can retuning the kick to the specific room (to avoid exciting room modes, especially in small places), moving the kick drum or mics a foot (changes where room modes occur), or applying EQ to the kick mic.

Do you have a gate available?  Does the drummer play the kick consistently loud, or are they 'all over the pace' with dynamics.  Its easy to try and won't hurt anything.

What kind of kick mic?

Does you bass also feedback at the same fundamental frequency as the kick?

Are you using subs, and if so, are the mics going through the subs?

Hey Mark, sorry i should have explained a bit better. So its only vocals, no drum mics, but the kick seems to be bleeding into the sm58's and beta58's which are for singers who are standing right in front of the drumkit.  So when i turn up the mains sometimes the kick is coming through front of house and sounds like its on the verge of feedback.

Also the bass rig causes same issue, but no where near as bad.  Thanks again

Simple (possible) solution first - angle the vocal mics up at 45 degrees.

This will reduce any spill into the mics - however, it seems as if you have some unwanted low end resonance too.  Do you have graphic equalisers on the FOH sends?
