14 gauge vs 13 gauge for 8 conductor
« on: August 08, 2014, 09:40:02 PM »

For longer runs, between 75-100', is there an important difference between 14 and 13 gauge 8-conductor speaker cabling? Something backed up by math perhaps?

Building a few cables and there is an appreciable difference in cost between these two sizes.

Thanks!

Between those two, the primary difference is price.

13 gauge wire has a resistance of 2.003 ohms per 1000 ft.  14 gauge has a resistance of 2.525 ohms per 1000 ft.  So, in a 100 ft cable, you've got 200 ft of copper.  Net result is .4006 ohms vs .505 ohms.  There won't be any audible difference.

One difference not already mentioned is that 14 will fit a little easier into an NL8.

Here is a nifty calculator you can use to calculate wire gauge performance for speaker wire: http://www.bcae1.com/images/swfs/speakerwireselectorassistant.swf
