I end up using the CL deesser a lot. I too feel like the display is lying to me, but with enough tweaking you can make it work.

I also like that it goes down to 1k. I use it on guitars and keys a lot to tame the midrange when those instruments get rowdy, and I need to leave room for the vocals.
