I've got 10 of the 615's and there is no sleep/gate mode/energy save. The are on all the time. I have no experience with any other 600 series models though.

The 712's I purchased would shut off with no signal after a short period.

You're thinking of the PRX 500 series.  The 600 series does not do this.  I haven't had any issues with the 700 series "sleep mode" at all.
