What is the difference between VIA and DVSC? What am I missing here?

From what I gather, it sounds like Via will be a host for other pieces of software and can import audio from USB and firewire devices and put them on the Dante network.

Maybe Keiran will chime in here and give us a little more info.

Hmmm... Well, with ASIO/Core Audio drivers, any software can transmit/receive through DVSC, but internally bridging USB and FW audio into the system would be new.

Why did you call it a SoundGrid Killer?

Somewhere I read something that sounded like you would be able to host plugins on your PC and use VIA to communicate with the Dante network for input/output to the plugins.

I assumed you can already do that with any plugin host using DVSC. You certainly can with any other ASIO/WDM/Core - compatible interface.

Thanks for the interest.

I have been monitoring this thread for a while. Most of the points are spot on here... the subject caused me some hesitation... not sure thats the point of Dante Via to be honest.

In the proverbial nutshell:

Dante Via does not require a piece of Dante-enabled hardware to be present in the network to provide clock (although a network with a hardware Dante-enabled clock device will be "better"... oh there I said it... please this is not out yet... I encourage you to try this out for yourselves by using your own/borrowing a friends hardware when the release comes, and form your own opinions).

Dante Via Can take any I/O from a computer and expose it as individual channels on the Dante Network directly. (We even found the HDMI in the TV we were using at the Demo in Las Vegas last week... when we thought of it... obviously HDMI is an audio interface... shows lack of tradeshow cheating at least). This includes Firewire, USB, etc etc... multiple channel devices, and multiple interfaces supported (obviously its not magic, and you will have the normal latency caveats)

Dante Via also exposes the audio channels from applications being used on your machine as direct Dante channels on the network... and yes you can route out of one application to in of another in the same machine using Dante Via... pretty cool for those times that you want the non-OS-Mixed audio!

That pretty much covers it... we should move specific questions to another thread with a less provocative title if nobody has a particular objection?

thanks

I've changed the thread title to something more appropriate.

Not sure what I was reading about with the Waves thing.

This looks really interesting.

Essentially its DVSC on steroids. On the software end you get much more granularity in dealing with applications running on the PC/Mac, and on the networking side, you remove the need for Dante hardware to 'anchor' the network of computers. I could see this being pretty handy in a few situations, and it also opens up the possibility of creating an entirely software mix enviroment for applications where latency isn't really an issue.

A nice addition to the Dante suite of products.

What I'm after though, is a way to get computers to have primary and secondary networks using standard network hardware. This would be very useful to me when building multitracking systems. Currently I need a Yamaha card to get pri/sec networks...

Can Via do this?

If so inclined, couldn't one accomplish this currently with DVSC and JACK ?

Dante is/will be AVB-compliant. Audinate has some discussion of this on their website and Keiran from Audinate mentioned this in one of his posts, IIRC.

Audinate may have changed their plans recently, this needs to be re-affirmed.

Does JACK run on  Windows? You are talking about the Jack Audio Connection Kit, right? The most popular audio API for Linux?
