Best DMX Software
« on: June 12, 2014, 09:55:53 pm »

So what's everyone's favorite free/open source DMX software for controlling DMX Lighitng on the computer, specifically LED Par cans.

I know of a few but I'm wondering about real world use.

Among others but these seem to be the ones that stand out

Based on another user we are now using Martin M-PC software http://www.martinpro.com/productnews/productnews.asp?id=505&Words=M%2DPC.  It is free to download and the Enttec dongle was only $160 on eBay.

Nice Find.  I thought most of the Martin/Elation etc software was locked down to their DMX dongles. We have an "Enttec compatible" dongle already. Sweet.

I'm using QLC+. You can check the features on the web page. It's not (yet?) near the big professional packages,
but it has it's strengths lot of satisfied users.

yes...martin MPC is great. there will be a slight learning curve, but this is a professional software, and is also cross platform, meaning that if you happen to come across a console form, you can use your PC show file. and you can also have an iPad/iPhone to control the software as well.

if you only need a single universe, then the Enttec DMX USB pro will be fine, otherwise you can purchase the Martin DMX USB box for around $500CA....

We use QLC+ at church, I honestly hate the interface no offense. They chose it because one of our guys is a linux/open source fanboy and will chose software based on it being open source rather than the best solution. We have issues with it losing communication mid service as well.

I'm having trouble with testing M-PC on windows Virtual Machine on my mac. even if I lower my screen resolution (I have a macbook pro rentia) it has isssues with text overlapping etc. making it unusable sadly. of course in real world I'd get a cheap windows pc to run it but I want to test it before I do that.

Chamsys Magic Q is what we use. It will work with your Entec. Rock Solid and loaded with features.

A+ on Chamsys Magic Q.
We have the Maxi Wing as well as a few extra dongles.

Are there any freeware packages that are usable with touchscreen PC's? (For playback, not programming)

We're using the Blizzard software (Eclipse) and it's nice for the kids running the show to just hit the buttons on the screen, but I'm not really happy with the feature set.
