I'm guessing that there is a component or connection on the input that is failing, and turning up the input signal breaks through some resistance barrier. The problem might be somewhere between the volume control and where the meter taps off. It might be the volume pot itself.

This sort of thing is usually caused by oxidisation of connector contacts rather than a faulty component.

The existing amplifier is the following:

UNIVERSITY SOUND MODEL # 9006
60 WATT POWER AMP

It has way more features and outputs than are necessary and seems to be able to operate in 70v or normal output. The speakers appear to be pretty basic ceiling speakers.

The one I was considering is a 70w mono amplifier so I think it would be a workable replacement.

I thought I would update this thread. We ended up purchasing a very basic Rolls RA170 Power Amplifier and it has performed perfectly. I really like its simplicity compared to the previous amplifier that was far more complex/capable than necessary.
