Micing up a race car driver, circa 1956
« on: May 10, 2014, 09:30:37 PM »

On-board camera footage of a lap of the Le Mans circuit in a Jaguar just prior to the 1956 race, with Mike Hawthorn driving and narrating (huge microphone but very impressive intelligibility given the ambient noise level...)

Very cool! I'm a big F1 fan and also love vintage racing and vintage audio equipment. Someone spent a considerable amount of thought and effort to come up with that mic and camera set up.

I think that mic is a military design for use in high noise environments.
Pretty effective.
Love the D type!

It's a Coles Broadcast noise canceling 4104 mic, still available today.

Wow! Hard to imagine that they wouldn't even bother to clear the track before he went around!
Very cool video.

It'd be tragic if they'd captured footage of him taking out one of those bicyclists.

That mic was developed for radio announcers calling live football (soccer in the USA) matches where the commentators were often standing only a few feet from thousands of fans shouting their lungs out.

Right tool for the job!

Things have changed a little between the 1950's and now.
