Having another look at the video it looks like Top Pop (Dutch program) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TopPop and not TOTP (UK) if that makes a difference

I was watching an old video of Mark Knopfler doing "Sultans of Swing" and saw a microphone I've never seen before.

And I've been in the sound biz in some form or another since the early 70's.

Can anybody identify the vocal mic in this video?  There a good shot of it around the 1:12 mark.  It looks like it might have a screw-on "button" connector and the mic looks like it might be rectangular in shape.

The best shot of it that I saw was at 4:05. The over driven video signal makes it look very different, almost rectangular in some shots. It doesn't look like an XLR or a UA connector on it, it looks like one of the screw on ones. I have an old Stromberg Carlson MD38S that uses that kind of connector. I wonder if I can find one and see if this mic actually still works.

I'm not sure it really matters, because the mic was there for show and not being used by Knofler.
"Top of the pops" was well-known for appearing bands to lip sync the entire segment. The mic was probably not even connected .. Knopfler's guitar lead goes where?

I always like when bands insists on using the mics that they saw their favorite band use in a music video. Even worse when they use the same mic technique that is often seen in music videos!

I'm with Rick, it looks most like a Neumann KM56 (see 2:00 in the video also).
But, it's purely academic, of course :)

I think we have a winner, I would not have got that!

For everything you ever wanted to know about a KM56.

Look close and you'll find one of my mics on that site.

Now we'll have everyone singing into the end of side address mic!
