Buying Digico SD8, MaDi Rack VS D2 Rack?
« on: May 05, 2014, 01:20:05 PM »

Hi all,
My company is about to purchase a SD8, since the new D2 Rack has came out but not much information on web, anyone knows which one is better?

I see the D2 Rack has 96K option in advantage, but the D-Rack was in lower range, makes me wonder if the MADI rack produce better sound than D2 Rack in 48k setting.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

The company I work for has a MaDi-Rack. It is fixed at 48 mic inputs with 8 outputs and slots to add an additional 16 outputs (2x8) it is BNC madi connectivity at 48khz only. I believe it is based on the older DiGi-Racks.

The D2 rack is based on the SD racks with the same converters. It has either 48 mic inputs, or 24 mic/24 AES inputs 16 line outputs with slots to add 16 more (2x8 AES, line, aviom etc.). Has BNC and Cat5 madi connections and runs at 48khz or 96khz. Basically it looks like a larger format D-Rack. It probably sounds a little better than the MaDi-Rack, but I have never compared them, and I'm not sure I could tell the difference anyway. An SD8 with a MaDi-Rack sounds pretty damn good, so any improvement will be in very small increments.

From what i've been told the D2 rack will be replacing the Madi Rack.

I am going to a Digico Masters Series training tuesday and will find out more on the D2 rack details and report back tuesday night.

I was correct the D2 rack is the replacement for the Madi Rack. Unless you are offered a smoking deal on the Madi Rack I would go D2. The D2 rack is utilizing the SD rack A/D conversion so it will be superior to the Madi Rack and the 96k option does allow the SD8 to have 1.1ms latency from input to output. I don't know if you already have a vendor you are going through but I can give you a quote if you want as long as you are in the US.

Thank you very much, Chris. I would go for the D2 Rack with no doubt now!
Thanks for your offer but unfortunately I am not based in U.S.

Cheers!
Zeno.
