I take care of a club in NYC that has a bunch of XSUB cabinets that had these woofers.

Years ago, using EV kits installed at a EV authorized service center, many were re-coned. None survived. Several had the spiders separate from the coil formers, others had the lead wires snap.

Frustrated, the cabinets were upgraded to Faital Pro woofers. They're still going strong.

Sorry to wake up this old thread but I thought my mistakes would benefit someone some day.
I went ahead and purchased these pre assembled recone kits, and a few voice coils and spiders total about 1200$! The first kit I installed (from a professional reconer that has more than 7 years experience) didn't even pass sound check, it would make a crackling noise as if the voice coil was hitting the back of the magnet! I replaced the spider with a much tougher one but still didn't sound right. I have done a second one and it looks like I have to accept that the 1200$ was all in vain!
So my friends, don't waste your money, just buy the ev genuine recone kits

This is a fairly typical event in Lounge Land.  We all desire to save money; however, doing something two, three, or four times is not it.  In mission critical or highly dynamic areas (I think sub drivers fall into both of those categories), it doesn't pay to skimp.

I've purchased a supposedly new EVX-180B from Speaker Exchange, but it's all black and has no E-V nameplate. They market it as original E-V, but I'm wondering if there are any fake EVX-180Bs on the market and if anyone has run across any that are "odd"?
My other 6 EVX-180Bs are a grey metal frame with a gold and black metal cover bearing the model number and manufacturer. Would this be what is termed an OEM driver? Mechanically, it seems to check out okay.

I'm thinking of reconing another unit that failed in a strange way: the apex of the cone collapsed. Due to the sloppiness of the glue on it, I suspect it might be a recone. I bought it rather cheap in 2006. Is there an identifying marker to tell an original E-V cone from an after market replacement kit? The other five are fine, but this one has mold spots on it and failed. Makes me suspect it's not original E-V either (the cone).

Mark,

MCM Electronics used to sell the OEM version of the ElectroVoice B series woofers. I bought four of the 18B's when they were discontinuing them. When they arrived I was surprised to see that the baskets were a lot like you described: all black with no EV markings, not even the rubber tire around the ceramic magnet.

So I suspect that this is the same sort of thing. They probably are EV baskets, though they may have been reconed. The Speaker Exchange in Tampa (I am assuming that is where you bought them) has been reconing loudspeakers for a really long time, so even if it is a recone, I expect that it will be a quality job from them.

Yes, it is the one in Tampa. Staff seem very attentive. Cathy is very much on top of things and remembered me from my past orders for some JBL parts a few years back.
They ordered the driver from E-V and the wait time was six days. Cathy says they only sell the unlabeled OEM now. She is willing to put me in touch with E-V to settle my concerns.
Anyway, I have tested the 'black' 180B and it works fine, no defects. I did the free air break in with 750W RMS drive with a sweep generator, to loosen up the suspension.
Interestingly, I compared the flux reading between the new 180B and the old one, and the flux is 8% higher on the new driver. Perhaps the old driver had lost some flux from age, but I would not expect that much loss in 10 years for a ceramic or ferrite magnet. The new E-V driver's magnet is in fact larger in diameter by 1/2", so perhaps it does have a bit more flux than the original due to its size.

At any rate, it's working nicely and the Radian is going back.
