First gig on new X32 rack last night.
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:32:04 PM »

Had my first gig on my new X32 rack last night and I have to say I'm very happy with it's performance. I used it in conjunction with an existing house pa. Patched into 6 open channels on the house snake (L, R, and 4 monitor mixes), put the x32 on stage so I didn't even have to touch the wiring on the house rig. Once I set my gain structure all was good.  It was incredibly cool having all of my tools available instead of having to make do with whatever the house had. The only complaint that I have is that you can't save presets from the iPad so if you get something going that you really like you have to use the controls on the X32 front panel. Overall impression is A+.

I can't double check right now since I,m on v2 but on the ipad you can go into scenes edit mode to save the scenes. Find the edit button on the scenes page and try it...

You absolutely can save scenes but you're saving them on the X32 not on the iPad. The iPad only reflects what is on the machine. If you like the scene and want to use it on another X32 load it onto a thumb drive then you can transfer it over.

I actually had already saved the show from my x 32 and transferred it to my x32 rack to get all of the scenes. I just don't see a way to save the scene using the iPad but I'll get in to that deeper this week.

I mixed the gig on it. I patched all of the stage inputs into my x32 rack and then tied the x32 into 6 unused channels on the house snake. then I assigned those channels in the house PA to Left, Right, Mon 1, Mon 2, Mon 3, and Mon 4, bypassed the channel EQ's and set my gain structure. This allowed me to mix using the full capabilities of the x32 instead of the very limited resources of the house pa. It also allowed me to use my preset for this particular band and to mix monitors directly from stage as well as mix FOH from the audience area instead of the poorly placed DJ cage that many venues have.

Along the top of the iPad Mix app there are tabs. One is called "Scenes" that's where you save/load, etc.

I knew about the tabs but had never had to rely on the iPad app to save the presets since I usually had the console off stage and could just save the changes there. I worked with the iPad app some this morning and recalling the scenes is fine but I'm kind of underwhelmed with scene saving from the app. I created several presets to play with so that I wouldn't accidentally alter or delete any of my existing useful presets. I'm glad I did. While practicing saving I somehow deleted one of the presets I had created. I guess I touched somewhere on the screen and instead of saving to a new location it saved over an existing practice preset. I know this was my mistake due to a lack of understanding but having a message indicating the preset that you are saving to instead of just asking if you'd like to save the current settings would help to alleviate this problem. Overall though I'm very happy with this piece of gear.

I use a similar set-up and my X32 stays in the truck now unless someone wants to use a control surface.  I hope that future upgrades places a tap delay button above the mute buttons on the app or replicate the assignable section over the mute buttons somehow.  Overall, very pleased with the app.

If someone else (like a BE) is mixing, you can probably leave the ipad in the truck.

I wish I could release the email I got after an artist we work with regularly appeared at an event we did not provide for.  The BE advanced the show with the firm and was assured that the relatively simple rider would be met.  When he arrived, it was either mix side-stage or on an ipad.  He did neither.  He made them find a snake and move the StudioLive to an appropriate FOH position.  The artist's manager sent a 4 page email to the festival organizers after the event, suggesting that should such be encountered in the future he would accept the artist fee and then personally go on stage to explain to the audience that the show was cancelled because neither the festival or their production company can read simple, 8th grade English, or alternately are incapable of telling the truth.

We're not talking about Journey or some big, international act, but a regional singer/songwriter & band with 4 mixes, 18 inputs, and nothing out of the ordinary.  Their only "demand" was to have a real console in a traditional FOH mix position.
