The greatest man - RIP
« on: March 22, 2014, 07:30:04 AM »

I don't use social media much other than here on PSW. No you Tube, Facebook, etc., and I don't know why I'm doing this now. Perhaps because I'm sitting here lost in thought.

Five years ago I brought my father into my home to live. He suffered many of the common age related problems often spoken of. Hearing loss, loss of vision, memory problems, etc.. We didn't want my father living alone in Florida, he was having a tough time, and we were close, so the right thing to do for me was to bring him home.

During that more than five year period my wife Helen took care of my father while I worked. Now I suppose that doesn't really sound like much, but she made his every meal, took him to the doctors 3-4 times every week, became his companion, and when the problems of old age made my father dependent on someone else for his needs it was she that stepped up catering to his every need with love and kindness. She is a person who is blessed. No vacations, no nights out, just caring for my father and her family. My father lived a long full life spending his last years with me. For that I am grateful to god.

We buried my Dad Thursday with full military honors and I will miss him. He was a great man. I love you Dad, rest in peace with god.

My very sincere and deep condolences to you, Bob. And to your family.

You are twice blessed. You have a wonderful wife and you had a remarkable father.

And you were a loving and caring son. This may or may not help to get through the mourning you are now faced with.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Beautiful tribute, Bob, to both your father and your wife.  I believe it's safe to say that you've been blessed with a wonderful family.

We lost Dad about 8 years ago and I still think of him every day.

My condolences, Bob.  Lovely tribute.  The published obituary was very nice, too.

I'm sure you'll all miss him very, very much and for so many fond and good reasons.  Nothing is quite like a life so fully lived and shared.

Bob - I'm so sorry to hear that. Wonderful tribute to him from you on PSW - one can be thankful to have parents well into adulthood but we're never ready to say goodbye. My condolences.

That was quite an obituary!  Sometimes my wife and I get called "heroes" when people find out we're both Air Force retirees.  I find this embarrassing (I usually mumble something like, "Thanks, it was an honor to serve"), since I never heard a shot fired in anger in my 23 year career.  When comes to heroes, your dad is the real deal for his contributions both on and off the battlefield.  Bless you, Helen and your daughters for being there for him!

What a wonderful tribute to a great man and Father, Bob. He's got to be proud of and grateful for your thoughts. You have all the condolences I can muster for this time.

I'm certain it's especially poignant for those of us that have lost parents. It certainly is for me, even eight years later.

I sincerely hope the memories of having him with you carry you through this time of grief and sadness, as well as the celebration of his life.

The very best to you and yours, Bob. God bless and keep you and your family.

Bob, so sorry to hear about your Father, he sounds like a wonderful man and obviously made you proud of him, probably the best legacy one could leave.  I've recently come to appreciate having a spouse who is a wonderful caregiver and the personal sacrifice associated with that, your wife deserves all possible kudos for her efforts.
