Looking for info/help
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:21:19 AM »

Hi everyone! Typically I wouldn't make my first post in any forum a cry for help but I do have a unique situation and am hoping to get some guidance. I have been reading and reading til my eyes burn and am yet to find anything definitive to help me out.

I said my situation is unique and it is. A dear friend of mine who also happens to be my sound guy is dying of cancer and I'd like to make my next gig a tribute to him but the problem is I don't know how to properly set up and run our live rig. We use a small PA system to practice with but our live rig is a much different beast. I am going to list what we have in hope that someone can tell me the easiest and/or best way to hook it all up.

I do know simple stuff like the mics get plugged into the snake and the corresponding numbers on the mixing board end get plugged into the channels and I also know that the subs get plugged into the crossover in some way or fashion. Any ways please don't laugh at the brands or whatever it was what we could afford and I think it sounds good when it's hooked up. I am asking here because on such short notice(2 weeks) we cant afford to hire a sound person, I also cant buy any more gear so I need to make what we have do what it's been doing and that's sound great and loud. I know how to mic everything and all that but what I don't know is how to hook up all the speakers and amps and how to control everything. I remember something about using the returns for the monitors but that was about it. Treat me like you are explaining it to a 10 year old. I'm not very Pro Sound savvy.

Mixer: Behringer 1222 USB (2 aux returns, 2 sub groups, main outputs)
Amps: QSC GX7, BGW 8000 (QSC for subs and BGW for tops)
Tops: Peavey PR15's (passive) 8ohm ea
Subs: Yamaha SW118's (passive) 8ohm ea 500w/1000w peak
Monitors: Mackie/Tapco TH15A (powered)
16 Channel snake with 4 returns ABCD
DOD R835 stereo 2 way crossover (starting @ 100hz)
All the cables including balanced and unbalanced to hook it all up plus spares.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me and if you can't then I understand.

You might want to change your display name to your real name or else the mods/admins will lock up this thread.

Mixer -> crossover -> returns on snake A & B (L & R respectively) -> respective amps (LF to QSC and HF to BGW) -> speakers (QSC to subs and BGW to tops)

Monitor Aux 1 & 2 -> returns on snake C & D (aux 1 & 2 respectively) -> powered monitors

Good to start at 100hz for crossover, and remember to observe correct gain structure.

I think if you put the crossover before the snake you will need more returns

I would put the crossover with the amps at the stage:

Mixer -> returns A&B on snake -> crossover -> amps -> speakers

Seriously Robert (Picardo) William (Shatner) (Jen-Luc) Picard, real names are required.  Not your favorite Star Trek characters.

Good catch!  :o
