Fiber optic madi jumper cable
« on: March 06, 2014, 12:43:02 AM »

I'm need to connect 2 pieces of gear within a rack with madi fiber optic.  I know nothing about this protocol.  The cables at this link are readily available to me locally.  Would any / all of these be appropriate for use as 3 foot patch  cables?  Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Yes, it is definitely possible to use these kind of fiber link cables with MADI. Most of the time, you will need multimode 50 µm with the correct kind of connector for the equipment you are using. Here is some information from RME about MADI and Optical.

What type of equipment are you trying to link?

62.5 vs 50 is the size of the wire, 50 is smaller, newer, goes farther, thus more expensive. Unless you are running more than 100m or going through patch terminations, 62.5 works 99% of the time. The only other spec you need to be aware of is single mode vs multi mode, and the connector end, SC, LC, and ST being common. I strongly suggest you mate the two end pieces together and not leave them loose. You should not mix sizes, and cannot mix modes.

Slightly more to it than that.

See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-mode_optical_fiber

The wire is the same size in all the OM designations, its the relative size of the core to the cladding that changes. The overall diameter of the glass+cladding assembly is 125um either way.

OM1 (62.5/125) will do gugabit ethernet to 275m and 100Mbit ethernet to 2000m!. So plenty more than 100m. MADI has a data rate of ~100mbit/s

The OP probably needs OM3 (50/125). This is pretty much the de-facto multimode standard now. OM4 is brand new, and better, but not in a way that matters to the world of low-bandwidth audio.
