Amazing some of the misinformation some people get about Mexico.

I can't speak for travel by auto in any areas other than the state of Sonora.

I'm guessing I may be getting different advice based on the fact that I wouldn't be travelling through Sonora, as well as the fact that I'd be hauling about $50,000 worth of p.a. gear in a trailer.

I travel to Canada a lot. We have a family business there. I am not allowed to do any real work there as they have laws protecting jobs for their citizens. Their view sees me as taking work away from Canadians.  So, officially, all I am permitted to do is observe to make sure of proper quality.

Check carefully what the rules are for "working" in Mexico. Get the paperwork done well in advance.
