Looking for opinions on small tops...
« on: February 13, 2014, 10:06:34 PM »

Hello all,

I'm looking for some advice on some new small tops.

I do sound for my rock cover band.
I have two systems that I switch between, based on the size of the room.

The components that are consistent:
Behringer x-rack
Crown ITech amps (a 4k and an 8k)
I always bring those components, and I swap out my speakers based on the room.

Big rooms - Two Dual 18 Sierra subs (loaded with JBL 2241's) and two JBL SRX722 tops.  This system stacks nice and I love it.  The problem is, it's too much system for some smaller rooms.  (I wish the srx722's could pole mount, because I'd always use them.)

Small rooms - one JBL SRX728 sub and two JBL SR-X 4722 tops.

These two speaker set ups allow me to utilize the same one pa rack.
I always take my x-rack and iTech amps...and just connect to which ever speakers I bring.
I'm happy with everything except the tops on my small system (JBL 4722's)

Some others I've tried:
I own - 2 QSC hpr122i, 2 JBL 4702.  I don't like any of these better than the JBL 4722.
I have tried the srx712's also, and liked the 4722's better.
I should also mention that I have an RCF nx12ma wedge that I love.
I have not a/b'd it against the 4722's...and I'm sure it will sound excellent/better, but it has really narrow dispersion, so I doubt it will be the right choice for FOH, (but maybe the non-wedge RCF NX would be).

If I went with passive tops, then my set up process stays consistent, and I get to continue to use the iTechs.
But I'm not opposed to going powered as that seems to be the majority of what's out there.
I have always been happier with 12's for tops because vocals and guitar seem to be clearer.

So my question is: what 12" tops would people recommend for my small PA??
They must pole mount, and I'd like to keep the budget under $1500 per speaker.

Thanks for any input.

Looks like you should try an STX box cause that is the only one left outside of the VTX line that you haven't tried.
Then go after some RCF boxes. Sounds like you like them already.

Check into JTR Speakers Noesis 2TX or (if you can round up a few more Benjamin's) the 3TX.  The 2TX is only 42# and pole mountable.

I run one Noesis 2TX per side (on tripods) with center clustered Orbit Shifters powered off of itech 6k and 8k respectively.  It's a very potent setup.

You can read an a/b comparison of Orbit Shifter/Noesis vs SRX728/722 here.  http://jtrspeakers.websitetoolbox.com/post/indy-sound-tech-speaker-shootout-6181039

If you're looking for a powered MI box, DSR112.

Thanks for all the input.

JBL STX Boxes - I haven't heard any opinions on these yet.  Would love to hear if somebody tried and/or liked these.  They're not cheap, so they're a tough gamble if there is no good feedback on them.

JTR Boxes - these look very cool, thanks for pointing them out.  I'm going to read up some more on then.

DSR112 - would love to hear if anyone has tried and/or compared them to other tops.  Such as - "they're better than XYZ", but "not quite as good as ABC".  Just looking for a sense of what caliber these are?
