I have two DCX2496 which have been working fine for years.  I replaced one with a BSS Omnidrive thinking it would sound better, but couldn't really tell the difference.

The difference when you get up into the higher end DSPs is the quality of the limiters and the number of filters for tweaking speakers. Arguably, the A/D - D/A conversion is supposed to be better on the high end DSPs as well. It would be interesting to do some ABX testing on the cheapies vs. the higher end processors...
