The key is cheap acoustic stuff is diffusion.  Make it look like art-yet it is "breaking up" the sound/reflections.

Exactly.  We were on this tack earlier in the thread, discussing the difference between and the desirability of using both diffusion and absorption where appropriate...as well as the desirability of keeping the room "live" enough and not simply trying to absorb sound energy and end up with a dead space.

Art...not just for arts sake.
