Does anyone know at what frequency these two models begin to lose pattern control?  Or stated differently how low do they go before they begin to beam?

Unlike most loudspeaker manufacturers, Danley Sound Labs actually offers this information from their website.  Go to the site, select the SH50 and open the "View CLF" option to see the dispersion vs. frequency of the cabinet.  Then do the 60.

Make sure your Java is up to date.

As you go lower with any speaker cabinet it will get wider as you go lower-not beamier.

Part of the problem is that most things audio are a "sliding scale" with a grey area.

For example-the rated pattern of the Sh50 is 50 degrees.  So at what angle would you consider "loss of control"?  55°-60°-70° something else?

It is not as "cut and dry" as people would like to think it is.

With that being said-and without looking up the data consider this.  The SH50 has a narrower pattern and a larger horn. 

So because the SM60 has a wider pattern and a smaller horn-the loss of pattern control may be pretty close.  For a given horn size-the wider pattern will have control down lower.

So if the choice is between the two boxes-I would let SPL output (SH50 wins), price (SM60F wins), low freq extension (SH50 wins), physical visual obstruction (SM60F wins) be the deciding factors.

Dispersion becomes *wider* as the frequency goes down.

I had a long response about Synergy horns.  As I tried to edit it for clarity I came to the conclusion that Ivan or Tom should respond.

Take Dick's advice and use the CLL Viewer tool on Danley's site.

And you can also use the free 3D modeling program DDT (Danley Design Tool) and actually put the speakers in the air-throw out mics into the audience and look at freq response and coverage maps and see if the coverage of a particular loudspeaker meets a particular need.

There are a number of short videos on the website that you can watch that will give you a "jump start" on how to use it.
