Kel,

Keep your JBL's! When you can, purchase some smaller used  speakers. You won't regret it.  And we put about 2K worth of power into our 725's and they really pop. So, yes. You have answered all of your own questions.

Will buying more of something or selling/trading something get you more work?  Remember it should be a business.
Have fun and good luck

I've seriously been thinking about downsizing. I really prefer the small 500-1500 person gigs, and way less so with B nationals events. Actually, my favorite rig is my "B" HPR153 over 2 x 181 subs per side, active monitors, Digi board. Done.

So, my A rig is the 4 725 over 4 728 but I've enjoyed taking half of that on many occasions as it kills the HPR rig. I built two racks, each with a P7000s for tops and rmx4050 for subs because thats what i own besides some older grey plx3402 i use for monitors. I take one rack for the 725 over 728 rig. It's a decent system that sips power, albeit right at the bottom of the rating.

as an aside note; I've not tried discreet mode in the 728. thought about a p7000s for each sub(750 per speaker) and moving the RMX 4050 to tops. There i go increasing the weight...but it's a rolling weight.

Maybe it's the 80+ gigs for 20 years, bad back.. i cut way down this year, still 60+ events.

I've used such techniques before! the problem can be the end of the gig.

Part of me is simply complaining as well as just bouncing ideas of you-all. At first I thought about the trade being a reasonable scaled system idea. Then as I was typing, I realized I will not get what the 725 can do...and could never do what 4 x 725 can do per side as well. 722 are hard to find. 725 easy.

725's very hard to find now. lol

To power your 728s in "discrete mode" I suggest XTi6002 or I-Tech 6000/8000.

Kel,
There's a number of us running SRX rigs, have ben for years, and are more than satisfied with the performance. IMO anything less will be a step backwards in capabilities. I also ran 722s for a year or so using them for the vocal side of the PA while the 725s were used to support the backline. Side by side there is no comparison, and the 725 just kicks the shit out of the 722 in the mid, low mid range of frequency response, and when properly crossed add some real solid punch to a kick drum.

I don't over power mine and use 3602s for the 725s and 4050s for my 718 subs. That combo seems to provide plenty of power running in stereo. Plenty of head room, very clear and accurate, smooth great sound. Keep the 725's, lift with both handles, and slide onto the tops of the 728s (horizontal). Easy peasey.

I do love my JBL 725 over 728 subs. Not quite a one man system though. I have a chance to trade the tops for two EV QRx115 per each 725, which aren't exactly light but i can get them on stands and I could scale back to one top too. Questions though:

They seem to array well, even with just touching the cabinet sides together. But am i losing some level going forward for more width?
Two per side is about the limit with these?  They have a rotatable horn. I can, and have run two 725 tops too. Doubtful i can array 3 QRX?
The EV sound sweet. They get loud with less power, at least my gut impression. I ran them full range off a Yamaha p7000s but the JBL seems underpowered off same amp...which is around 1100 watts @4 ohms. Does that seem like a correct assessment? I do gigs where a single 20a circuit or a couple 15s is what you get..

I run my JBL full range and the internal Xover seems to do well. How about the EV running full range?

the EV is flyable

If i wanted a scalable JBL system I could find a pair of 715... will a 715 array with a 725 if the horns were parallel?

perhaps I've answered my own questions..

Not too many people here will encourage you to sell a 725/728 rig. If they do, they will probably be hitting you up later to buy it.

This.

BTW, if you ever want to sell... ;)

A horn that small has very little pattern control.  I'll wager that rotating it makes no difference below 5k, at which point it's likely beaming anyway.

I'm in the process of selling off most of my SRX rig. I can't be happier with the SM 80. Powerful, lightweight, and pole mountable. I'm using them in rooms that I would normally run 4, 715's /722's.

I still have a couple new 728's if anyone is interested.
