The past 2 days (12/5-6) have seen Jim's viewing, funeral, and wake.
I arrived at the funeral home about 20min after it opened for viewing, at that time the line was over 100yds long and 2 or 3 wide. We waited 2hrs to get in and left at about 5pm. The line was almost as long, and the hundreds still in line were waiting in the rain.
It was nice that the Today show did a segment, and NBC dedicated the Rockefeller Center tree lighting show to Jim. Matt Lauer waited almost an hour in line behind me before someone came out and escorted him in. He never asked to be treated like a celeb, he was patiently waiting.
At the funeral the main sanctuary was full, as was the entire lower level of the church, and there were people who had to stand in the street. At the wake the Irish took over and people with drinks and food in their hands celebrated the life of an amazing man.
The outpouring on Facebook has been amazing, and a good place to get some emotional release. The GoFundMe site that was set up to support his family raised over $100k in four days, a testament to the number of people whose lives were made better for knowing Jim. For those who knew him, or those who didn't, here is a link to a memorial page.
