Gig Networking Example & Implementation Steps
« on: March 21, 2011, 02:42:32 PM »

I thought this might be useful to others who are implementing various flavors of networking on gigs.

The hardware we're using that is networked:
1.) Yamaha LS9
2.) Sennheiser Net1's (2 of them daisy-chained together with Cat5)
3.) Netbook
4.) iPad
5.) Linksys E2000 Router

Our software components:
1.) Sennheiser WSM
2.) Sends On Fader
3.) RealVNC (Server on Notebook, Viewer on iPad)
4.) Yamaha DME Network Driver, Studio Manager, LS9 Editor

Implementation steps:
Hard Code IP for Net-1 Units, Yamaha LS9, and notebook PC - Static IP’s for wired interfaces only
01.) Configure router to use 30 DHCP addresses (100-129), assign SSID with security
02.) Assign wired IP addresses in range above DHCP pool: 192.168.1.130-144
   a.) NET1-1 is 192.168.1.130
   b.) NET1-2 is 192.168.1.131
   c.) Notebook (Primary) is 192.168.1.132
   d.) Notebook (Backup) is 192.168.1.133
   e.) Yamaha LS9-32 is 192.168.1.135
03.) Install Yamaha DME Network Driver, Studio Manager, LS9 Editor, & Sends On Fader on notebook
a.) Install the Yamaha products in that order following all documented steps.
04.) Install RealVNC Server on ASUS Notebook
05.) Download RealVNC Viewer for iPad
06.) Set Static IP addresses for Sennheiser Net1’s using Web interface then power cycle
07.) Set both ASUS IP addresses for the wired interface (Adapter Properties)
09.) Connect Daisy-Chained NET1’s to router (IP: 192.168.1.130 & 131)
10.) Connect Netbook to router (IP: 192.168.1.132)
11.) Connect Yamaha LS9 to router (IP: 192.168.1.135)
12.) Ensure that you can connect to the Net1's with WSM
13.) Start RealVNC Server on notebook
14.) Start Sends On Fader on notebook and click connect – Ensure that things works correctly locally
15.) Using the iPad, connect to the SSID that the router is broadcasting using the assigned security
16.) Start RealVNC Viewer on the iPad and connect to the wired IP for the notebook (192.168.1.132)
17.) To click & drag using the RealVNC Viewer on iPad double-click with the stylus then drag.

If you're running the Windows firewall on any of the devices, you'll also need to add an exception to the firewall to allow the RealVNC Viewer access from the iPAD (instructions are on the RealVNC site).

If you're using some of the security features of the router (e.g., disabling SSID broadcast, WEP or WPA security, permitting only listed MAC addresses on the wireless network), the IP addresses for all the devices on the wireless network including the console(s) need to be added to the router and the additional information provided as part of the RealVNC connect process.

I've also discovered the device name used in Yamaha's DME-N network driver can't contain any spaces.

Hi Kirby,
Thanks for the useful additional info - Funny how one thinks all details have been covered and another set of eyes sees other things that should be mentioned!

I have a space in my device name and it's working for me. The notebook is running XP with SP3. The name we're using is "BCB LS9-32" Are you using a different OS?

I was using the broadcast SSID to gauge signal strength when walking around using the iPad for the initial implementation. Access is protected with WPA2/WPA mixed mode, but you make a good point about not broadcasting the SSID - that would be a more secure, or at least less visible approach. As I set it up, I know what the SSID is... I think I'll change that  :)

Could you tell me where you needed to provide additional info for the VNC connect process? I'm not currently limiting access by MAC address, but if I do I want to have a clear understanding of the impact.

Thanks,
Bob
