I did this once before in 2007.  It's really simple, don't overthink it.

20K people at a concert, the show is mixed in its entirety on a Yamaha M7CL.  How many complaints on sound quality?

I say "none because of the console".

The original post was "how many people would notice if Led Zep were mixed on an M7 rather than a Midas XL8, this when Zep was playing the UK somewhere and Big Mick was doing them on an XL8.

If you truly think the audience would notice, please explain why and how.

Here's the original:

No "what if they switched midway through the show"; do the show on the M7 and see how many complaints ensue.

...and I'll up the ante even more: I claim "no complaints" if the desk were an X32 (as long as it kept working... ;-).

Responders need to be in the regional business or above.  There is a reason this is in the LAB.

One more thing:

After my original post in 2007, I got several PMs and emails from management types at Big Sound Companies You Have Heard Of, telling me I was exactly correct.

If you can mix, you can mix on anything.
Not a single paying patron at a concert has ever commented to me about anything other the balance of the instruments or overall volume.

Or to put it another way-would they sell more tickets if a "big dollar" console was used?

OR could they raise the price of the tickets if a "big dollar" console was used?

What is the incentive-except to make the sound guy happy? and feed his ego?

Just because you can "demand" a specific piece of gear does not mean you should-----------------

Some people just like playing with toys that THEY will never personally purchase-but enjoy making others spend money to make THEM happy.

If you would not buy it yourself-then you should not expect others to.

Just my opinion.

There was a former competitor from many years back that was out with a band that showed up at a venue that I was doing monitors for.  He proceeded to bitch about the FOH gear (not mine) and how it was a "tinker toy"

Yet at the venue that HE had a system at-it was about the same level of gear-but HE wanted better stuff when HE was out with a band.

Maybe I am missing something-------------------------

No people would ask for refunds..

1.)  They'd be happy to experience Led Zeppelin performing.

2.)   Everything being the same, (same BE, no changes in system settings, same amount of time & care getting signal levels, eq, comps, gate settings, etc..)  the console's differences in "sound" would/could be absolutely minimal.

3.)  I doubt if any attendees would even notice that anything changed.

Changed from what?  Audience arrives, show is performed on an X32 or M7 or LS9 or whatever, audience leaves.

  Doug,

Yes, the audience wouldn't care what brand of console..  it would never occur to them to even be a question.

My last answer that you quoted was in reference to the last line in today's original post :  "No, what if they switched  midway through the show, etc..."
