So, to summarise, I think it's fair to say that the *only* advantages the Compact has are the dedicated inserts (if you really need them, especially considering you can achieve the same, albeit sacrificing some ins/outs) and the paintwork (for some).

Otherwise, the Expression is (much) cheaper and does a whole lot more...

Can one assign the inserts on Expression to be main bus pre EQ for Smaart?  This would be a deal breaker for me.

Can you explain why this is a deal breaker?  Why does whatever you are using need to be inserted?

Also, do you mean direct outs?

For Smaart you gotta have a pre-eq source coming from somewhere.  Inserted is only way I can figure to do it.

So, with a digital desk you soft patch the insert point to an output port and Bob's your uncle.

Wouldn't you just use a direct out? Sorry maybe I'm misunderstanding your application.

Hmm. I use dual FFT software on a daily basis in the summer, and never ran into these issues. I never use board EQ as system EQ though.

Correct, that's the function of DSP.  At most, board EQ can be tweaked for personal preference/"voicing", after the system is aligned.
